E!’s new PR reality show:The Spin Crowd

By Danielle Kuhman

E! TV has a new show called ‘The Spin Crowd.’ It is a reality show dealing with Command PR, one of the largest public relations firms in the country. After it strategically premiered August 22 following the season premiere of ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” it had over 2.3 million hits (source: TV by the numbers). From what I know, this is the first show of its kind.

Take a look here at the promo for the show online.

One of the issues I have with it is how realistic it would be in a setting away from Hollywood. PR does similar things everywhere, but in a place like Los Angeles where beauty and fame are magnified more than anywhere else, it may not be very realistic for a PR associate in St. Louis, for example. The first episode alone features the owner, Jonathan Cheban, telling Ericka, a first year associate, that he has made her a pre-paid appointment for lip injections. The PR people I have talked to or those who have come into any of my classes at school seem very different from the associates Command has working for them.

Going along with that, it often takes years of experience in the business before someone can have that opportunity with a huge company like Command. The fact that almost all of their workers are all female, all young, and all stunningly beautiful makes me question how ‘real’ it is. Image is everything, but just because someone is pretty does not mean they’ll do an exceptional job on all projects.

The atmosphere in their smaller-sized usually seems to be one of stress and drama, but ideas are always flowing. I question if all PR offices run in the same manner they do, but it is important to keep in mind that the atmosphere in any office changes and intensifies when your clients are Mario Lopez and Kelly Osbourne, amongst others in their case.

The Spin Crowd has used social media to help promote the show. As an avid Twitter follower, I make sure to check www.twitter.com/spincrowd almost daily to see what is coming up on the show and what the company currently has going on. Regardless of whether you’re interested in PR in Los Angeles or not, it can’t hurt to follow them (and other PR companies) to get a better sense of how life is there on a day-by-day basis.

After watching this show every Sunday evening at 10/9 C on E!, I have been left with one question. A question of what is real, what is scripted, and the question of what PR companies are like outside of Hollywood. So what do you think: is PR mostly the same no matter where you go? Or is working for a huge LA firm completely different from being in a smaller town? Give me your thoughts!

The only way to find this out is to visit, talk to employees, or work for a few in different areas. I hope most of you will start watching ‘The Spin Crowd’ so you can see everything the owners and associates go through.
