The Changing Face of Media

By Steve Byers

I’m teaching a class this semester called “Alternative Media.”  At our first class we were discussing just what comprises alternative media. The students were discussing social media, and one pointed out that, for her generation, online and social media is the mainstream media. For the digital generation, newspapers and magazines are the alternative media.

As my generation would say, the times there are a’changin.

Steve Byers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism at Marquette University’s Diederich College of Communication.
